Mineral oil or petrolatum is odorless and colorless by-product of petroleum refining process. It forms a barrier on skin, which helps retain its moisture. It is used as an alternative to natural oils as it is quite cheap in comparison.
How to Identify?
- Read ingredient list on the product label and look for Ingredients like petrolatum/mineral oil
- Many companies don’t show complete ingredients list on their product labels; you should try checking with their Customer Care
If not properly refined, Petrolatum can be contaminated with PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) – ‘anticipated carcinogens’.1
National Toxicology Program, U.S. classifies Mineral Oil: Untreated and Mildly Treated as ‘known to be human carcinogens’.1
Mineral Oil makes a thin film over skin, which clogs natural pores. It may result in skin problems like acne and other bacterial infections.
